5.1.8 Bikes, Skateboards, Scooters, and other Recreation and Transportation Devices 

ISU is a bike-friendly campus in the heart of a community with miles of scenic biking trails.  ISU also recognizes the importance of sustainable modes of transportation on the town streets that bound the University campus.

Safety comes first at ISU for all members of the University community and pedestrians have the right of way on campus.  The University quad, plazas, and other high use, high density outdoor campus pathways designated by the University as “Dismount Zones” are reserved for exclusive use by pedestrians.  Dismount Zones are identified by prominent signage instructing riders of bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and any other recreation and transportation devices to dismount and “walk your wheels.” A notification of this policy with a map of current campus dismount zones will be sent to the University community on an annual basis.

In outdoor areas on campus not marked as designated Dismount Zones, riders may use recreation and transportation devices but are responsible for doing so in a controlled manner, at a safe speed, and must dismount when and where necessary for safety given the circumstances such as density of pedestrians, terrain, and conditions (e.g., weather, construction, events, etc.).  For purposes of this policy, riding in a controlled manner means being able to easily stop, and to easily avoid people and structures.  Performing tricks and stunts on recreation and transportation devices is not riding in the controlled manner required by this policy and is not permitted on campus.  Riding etiquette (like announcing your approach to those who may not see you) is encouraged.

Riding recreation and transportation devices inside University buildings is not permitted.

This policy does not prohibit the use on campus of mobility assistance devices and other approved accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Police bicycles, EMS, and university vehicles used for authorized University purposes are excepted from this policy.  Requests for exceptions may be submitted to Environmental Health and Safety and should be received at least two weeks prior to an event. 

Violations

Violations by University students and employees will be grounds for discipline under applicable University policy.  Violations by non-affiliated individuals will be referred to the Illinois State University Police.
