2.1.12 Pass/No Pass - Credit/No Credit Policy

Pass/No Pass Option

The Pass/No Pass (P/NP) option allows students to be graded with a P (Pass) or NP (No Pass) rather than a traditionally graded structure (that is, A, B, C, D, or F grades). Students may elect to enroll in eligible courses under the Pass/No Pass option. Students may elect to switch their enrollment to P/NP for eligible courses already in progress, or from P/NP back to traditionally graded, until the end of the twelfth week of the term. This deadline will be adjusted proportionally for courses taken during a term lasting less than a regular semester. In unusual cases, exceptions may be granted by the Office of the University Registrar in consultation with the instructor.

Students eligible to choose the P/NP option: In order to use the P/NP option, undergraduate students must be in good academic standing with at least 12 hours of college credit. Courses taken with the P/NP option cannot be counted towards graduate program requirements.

Grading and Grade Point Average: A grade of P is recorded when the grade submitted by the instructor is A, B, or C. A grade of NP is recorded when the grade submitted by the instructor is D or F. Although an entry of P or NP will be entered on the student's record, these entries are not used in computing the student's GPA.

Courses not eligible to be taken P/NP: The P/NP option is designed to encourage students to enroll in courses they otherwise would not take. Courses in a student's major or minor may not be taken on the P/NP option. Exceptions include courses in the student's major or minor field that are offered only as credit/no credit (CR/NC) courses. No Group 1 course in the General Education Program may be taken under the P/NP option.

Limitation on number of hours: No more than six semester hours of work under the P/NP option may be taken each semester, with a maximum of 25 semester hours under the P/NP option presented for graduation.

Registration for P/NP option: Students may elect the P/NP option as part of the regular registration process. Students may elect to switch their enrollment to P/NP for eligible courses already in progress, or from P/NP back to traditionally graded, until the end of the tenth class day. After that time, until the last day of the twelfth week of classes, students wishing to change a course registration to P/NP or to revert to a traditional grade should contact the Office of the University Registrar. Deadlines will be adjusted proportionally for terms lasting less than a regular semester. In unusual cases, exceptions to this deadline may be granted by the Office of the University Registrar in consultation with the instructor.

Courses taken for graduate credit are not available as P/NP.

Credit/No Credit Courses

For courses offered on a Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) basis, the designation of CR (Credit) or NC (No Credit) will be entered on the student’s record. Credit/No Credit is a categorization assigned to specific courses; all students enrolled in a CR/NC-designated course will either receive a CR or NC on their record. Students cannot elect a CR/NC grade in courses not specifically categorized as Credit/No Credit.

Workshops, Institutes, and Professional Practice may be offered on a Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) basis receiving a grade of CR or NC. Departments may offer 193, 293, 393, 397, 398, 429, 493, and 498 on a CR/NC basis with approval in advance through the Graduate Curriculum Committee curricular process for graduate courses or through the Office of the Provost for undergraduate courses. CR/NC courses are not computed in the GPA.
