3.1.1 Categories of University Employees

Overview

The following categories of University employees shall be established to assist the University in achieving distinction in its assigned mission. Personnel practices shall ensure freedom from discrimination regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, order of protection, gender identity and expression, ancestry, age, marital status, disability, genetic information, unfavorable military discharge, status as a veteran in employment, or other factors prohibited by law. The Illinois State University Constitution may recognize subgroups within the categories and shall specify the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of persons in different categories and subgroups.

Academic Employees

Academic employees shall consist of all faculty (tenured/tenure-track/non-tenure-track), faculty associates employed by the laboratory schools, and those exempt (salaried) and non-exempt (hourly) administrative and/or professional personnel who are not civil service employees.

Faculty include any ranked or unranked appointment for the purpose of instruction, organized research, or public service in one of the academic [credit hour producing] departments and related areas. Included in Faculty are tenured/tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty in Milner Library and non-tenure-track faculty in University College.

Laboratory School/Faculty Associates are any appointments that do not hold rank in an academic department and are assigned exclusively to one of the University Laboratory Schools.

Administrative and/or Professional personnel includes any academic appointment for the purpose of support for the area of instruction, organized research, and public service.

Civil Service Employees

Civil Service employees shall consist of those exempt (salaried) and non-exempt (hourly) personnel whose employment matters fall within the jurisdiction of the State Universities Civil Service System as prescribed by statute.

The Board of Trustees is designated by statute as the employing authority for all State University Civil Service System of Illinois (SUCSS) employees of Illinois State University.  All Civil Service employees of Illinois State University are employed in accordance with the provisions of the State Universities Civil Service Act (110 ILCS 70/), as amended, and the rules of the University Civil Service Merit Board.

Other Employees

Other employees, including graduate assistants and student hourly workers, shall be employed in accordance with the governing document of the Board of Trustees.
