When an employee is temporarily assigned additional duties, a temporary increase, referred to as “acting” or “interim” compensation may be added to that employee’s base salary. Acting/Interim compensation, also referred to as an acting/interim increment, may be used for positions containing the term "acting" or “interim” in the title and for employees who are assigned additional duties or duties of a higher level. Acting/Interim compensation may be implemented as a separate amount, but is regarded as a temporary increase in the individual’s Institutional Base Salary (“IBS”) as defined in Policy 3.2.11 Employment in Excess of Full-Time Appointment. This pay category should be used if the temporarily assigned duties are intended to be part of an individual’s regular, full-time duties.
When an employee serves in an Acting/Interim appointment, the IBS is comprised of the original base salary/compensation and the additional acting/interim increment. The Acting/Interim increment is associated only with temporary duties assigned. When the employee’s Acting/Interim appointment ceases, the Acting/Interim increment and merit or other increases associated with this increment are removed. Any increases associated with the original base salary/compensation (e.g. 2% merit increase to the employee) will be retained.
There is no fixed amount designated for the Acting/Interim compensation. The increment shall be based on good faith negotiations between the employee and the hiring authority and approved by the Vice President for the division in which the employee works or appropriate designee.
Appointments of faculty to administrative assignments not having the term “acting” or “interim” in the title are to be made in accordance with Policy 3.2.14 Assignment Of Person Holding Faculty Rank To Administrative Or Other Nondepartmental Positions, Policy 3.2.13 Administrator Selection , Policy 3.2.16 Academic Dean Responsibilities, Appointment, Compensation, Terms, and Evaluations, and Policy 3.3.6 Academic Department Chairperson Responsibilities, Appointment, Compensation, Terms, Evaluation.
Compensation above the base salary for Acting/Interim assignment is not permitted solely on the basis of funding derived from external sources; rather such salary increases must be justified based on expanded assignments or duties. Approved recommendations for Acting/Interim assignments for Administrative/Professional and Civil Service employees are forwarded to Human Resources for final approval and implementation.
