A full-time exempt Administrative/Professional or full-time exempt Civil Service employee may be granted a noncontinuing appointment to teach not more than four (4) credit hours in each regular semester in addition to their full-time primary appointment. These employees should only be assigned employment outside their regularly assigned duties and responsibilities in accordance with Policy 3.2.11 Employment in Excess of Full Time Appointment. This employment assignment for a credit-generating course is categorized as an “Overload” and, thus, should be outside of the employee’s normally scheduled work hours.
Requests for a teaching assignment for Administrative/Professional or Civil Service employees should be initiated using the Human Resources Personnel Action Form (PAF) by the chairperson/school director of the academic department/school in which the teaching is to take place. Salary shall be at least the minimum of the nontenure track range for the appropriate degree and, for employees returning to teach in the same department, consistent with the employee’s salary for their prior teaching appointment in that department.
The request must also be approved by the employee's primary position supervisor and staff administrator/department head and then submitted to the appropriate college for endorsement.
As aforementioned, this teaching assignment should fall outside of the employee’s regularly defined schedule; however, if the teaching occurs during the employee's regular workday, the employee and primary position supervisor must agree in writing either to require the make-up of missed time, or to develop an alternative solution mutually satisfactory to the employee, supervisor, and primary department. This written agreement must be forwarded to Human Resources before the teaching assignment begins.
Administrative/Professional or Civil Service employees shall not be utilized in teaching to displace members of a departmental faculty.
Nothing in this policy shall preclude a department from assigning adjunct status, when appropriate, to an Administrative/Professional or Civil Service employee.
Summer and winter term teaching assignments should follow this same procedure but will be categorized as summer and winter teaching instead of designated as an “overload.”
